Post Construction Cleaning Tip 23

Fine Dust Is The Biggest Problem Post-Construction. Use A Damp Microfiber Cloth To Have It Stick, Vacuum The Area With A Brush Attachment When Dry And Do A Final Spot Clean With A Damp Cloth. Hit Every Surface – Floors And Walls Too!

One of the most insidious problems in any post-construction job is fine dust.  It’s  nearly impossible to contain, even when taking steps to do so.  This kind of dust can wreak havoc on electronics and even clog the HVAC system in your space.  To tackle fine dust and get rid of as much as possible try this…

  • Use a DAMP microfiber cloth.  NOT soaked or the dust will turn to mud.  You want the dust to stick to the cloth.  Wring it out until it is just barely damp.
  • Have a bucket of water nearby to wash out the cloth after EVERY pass.
  • Once the bucket gets cloudy, change it or you risk reapplying it to the surfaces you’ve just cleaned.
  • Let the area dry and then run over it with a vacuum.  Usually a brush attachment will work.
  • For a final spot clean, take a damp cloth and give everything a wipe down.
  • Hit EVERY surface – counters, floors, walls, ceiling, baseboard, etc.
  • For dust on carpeted areas, use a wet/dry vac with a HEPA filter to scoop up that fine dust.

The most important aspect of cleaning fine dust is to avoid accidentally reapplying.  While it may be painstaking and take much longer than usual, you will want to be cautious, move slowly and consistently clean out your cloth.  It may seem tedious but properly cleaning after construction work could keep you from having a hefty HVAC repair bill.
