Halloween Clean Up Tips
Halloween is one of the most exciting times of the year.  For many, this is less to do with the holiday itself and more to do with the season change.  Pumpkin spices, crisp winds and spooky outdoor activities make for an exciting few months before the frigid winter chill hits.  While you may be looking forward to the major holidays right around the corner, you may not be so thrilled with the clean up that Halloween leaves in its wake.  Here are a few quick tips on how to make your post-Hallows Eve clean up a piece of pie – pumpkin to be exact!
Candy Wrapper Clean Up For the inevitable candy wrappers stuck on your walk and among the leaves in your drive, use a leaf blower.  This saves you from having to break your back trying to get litter off of your property and untangled from landscaping.
Muddy Footprints Some Halloweens are simply cold while others are rainy and create thick mud that kids trample through.  Unfortunately, those tiny bootprints may end up on your porch.  Remove your planters, furniture, etc. and use a hose to spray off the gunk and dirt.  For wood porches, be sure to have it cleaned and sealed during the Spring so it is easy to maintain throughout the year.  This way, if you notice a muddy disaster on your porch, it can easily be washed away.
Removing Wax Whether you had Halloween candles lit for ambiance or your pumpkins caused a waxsplosion when you carted them to the trash, don’t worry about wax that has gotten onto carpeting.  It is so much easier to remove cooled wax so, if it just happened or its still hot, give it a few minutes to cool off.  Break it up with a dull knife and cover any remaining bits with a paper towel or rag.  Press a warm iron to the paper towels and wait a minute or two.  The iron melts the wax and the paper towel absorbs it.  Depending on how much is spilled, you may need to replace the paper towel to avoid spreading wax already accumulated.
Removing Make-Up Some costumes require make-up application and, in a flurry of preparation for the big night, some of it might end up on your carpet.  If this is the case, many store-bought carpet and upholstery cleaners can remove it.  Work the stain from the outside in towards the center and ALWAYS blot.  Never rub because you will simply grind the stain further into the carpet.  Before you use a particular cleaner, check a small area first to make sure none of the carpet color ends up on your paper towel or cloth.
Door Knobs Your outside door knobs might be full of bacteria due to dozens of sticky hands grabbing it during trick-or-treating.  Use an anti-bacterial wipe or some bleach cleaner to disinfect the knob.  Once dry, you can use some hydrogen peroxide to bring back the shine to your door knob.
New Holes Whether outside or in, you may have gotten a little carried away with your decorating and now there are dozens of holes in your walls.  An easy fix for larger holes is to fill them with cosmetic sponges and then spackle the area.  When the spackle dries, smooth it with sandpaper and you can add fresh paint to make the wall good as new.  For nail and screw holes, use spackle, toothpaste or wall putty on the edge of a knife to fill in the tiny hole spaces left behind.  Scrape away any access, sand the area and apply fresh paint.
